Consciousness raising, self-awareness, self-representation, 1981, n. 16. Suppl., pp. 30-32

In the feminist practise of consciousness raising - translated into Italian with the term self-awareness, or self-consciousness - women, and each woman for herself, for the first time self-represented their selves in a collective dimension. In this practise, the subject of the enunciation and the subject of the enoncé coincided, but also a distance seemed to be created which would allow women to truly see themselves. But it was also a practise which explored and exposed the limits of words.

CACCIARI Cristina - LAMBERTI Raffaella, Moebius, Weininger. Woman as lack. Woman as nothingness, 1981, n. 16. Suppl., pp. 56-72

The author analyse some passages from Paul Julius Moebius's Women's Mental Inferiority and Otto Weininger's Sex and Character. These texts present a varied range of representations of Woman, all of them characterised by a lack in comparison with man. On the physiological and mental levels, woman is seen as inferior with reference to a supposed normality; thus, a man who positively exceed this measure is a genius, whereas a woman is not a woman any more.

Looking at some themes such as old age, work, education, both Moebius and Weininger inscribe woman into "nature", confining her in a complementary reproductive function. An important point is their refusal of the idea of women's education; there are neither natural nor social reasons to think that an educated, well informed woman could be of service to society. The answers and comments of some contemporary women thinkers - such as Isolde Kurz, Irma von Troll-Borostyáni, Maxie Friemann - are also examined.

Self-representation and relational conflict: the diaries of Sofija and Lev Toltstoi, 1982, n. 22. Suppl., pp. 139-146

The results of a research conducted in a non psychoanalitical key on Sofija and Lev Tolstoi's considerable autobiographical production are here reported. The research's aim was to trace the structure of their relationship, and the conflict taking place throughout it.

The underlying dynamics are theoretically examined and the couple is identified as a relational system whose characteristic logics is circularity of behaviour, where relational rules establish also internal positions of power. From this point of view, rather than that of a true/false logics, these diaries are a valuable document.
